What is a liver resection?
A liver resection (hepatectomy) removes the part of the liver that contains a tumour, together with a margin of healthy liver tissue.
Who is it recommended for?
It is used for primary liver cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma, and for bowel cancer that has spread only to the liver.
How the procedure is done
Planning
Scans show exactly where the tumours are and how much healthy liver will remain after surgery.
Removal
The surgeon removes anything from a small segment (segmentectomy) to a whole lobe (hemihepatectomy).
Regeneration
The remaining healthy liver grows back towards its original size within a few weeks.
Recovery timeline
- In hospital
You usually stay 4 to 7 days, depending on how much liver was removed. Daily blood tests check liver function and clotting.
- First weeks
Tiredness is common while the liver regrows. Walking every day helps your recovery.
- 6–8 weeks
Most people return to normal activities within six to eight weeks.
Risks and side effects
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding, as the liver has a rich blood supply
- Bile leaking from the cut surface of the liver
- Temporary liver weakness while the liver regrows
- Infection or blood clots
Your surgeon will explain the specific risks for your case before you give consent.

Liver Resection FAQ
Can the liver really grow back?
Yes. Healthy liver tissue regenerates, so the remaining liver grows back towards its normal size within weeks, provided enough healthy liver was left.
Can liver metastases from bowel cancer be operated on?
Often, yes, if the cancer has spread only to the liver and can be removed safely. Many patients also have chemotherapy.
