What is breast reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction rebuilds the shape, volume and outline of the breast after a mastectomy. It can help restore symmetry, make clothes fit better and support confidence and wellbeing.
Who is it suitable for?
Most women having a mastectomy can be offered reconstruction. The timing and method depend on your cancer treatment, your general health, your body shape and your preferences. Your breast surgeon and plastic surgeon plan it together.
Reconstruction options
Implant-based reconstruction
A temporary tissue expander is placed and gradually filled, then replaced with a permanent silicone implant. The first operation is shorter, but implants may need maintenance later.
Reconstruction with your own tissue (flap)
Skin and fat are moved from another part of the body, most often the lower abdomen (DIEP flap) or back (latissimus dorsi flap). The result feels more natural, but the operation and recovery are longer.
Timing
Reconstruction can start during the mastectomy (immediate) or be done months or years later (delayed).
Recovery timeline
- In hospital
Implant reconstruction usually needs one to two nights; flap reconstruction usually several nights with close monitoring of the new tissue.
- Weeks 2–4
Most people recover from implant-based reconstruction within two to four weeks.
- Weeks 4–8
Recovery after flap reconstruction takes four to eight weeks because there are two healing areas: the chest and the donor site.
Risks and side effects
Risks depend on the method used and include:
- Implant problems such as rupture or capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue around the implant)
- Loss of blood supply to a flap (flap failure)
- Weakness or a bulge at the donor site
- Infection, bleeding or delayed wound healing
Your surgeon will explain the specific risks for your case before you give consent.

Breast Reconstruction after Mastectomy FAQ
Will radiotherapy affect my reconstruction?
Radiotherapy can change how the reconstructed breast heals and looks, so your surgeons may recommend a particular method or timing if you need it.
Can the nipple be rebuilt?
Yes. A nipple can be reconstructed and the areola tattooed in a small later procedure.
