Cosmetic Dentistry

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

While general dentistry offers preventative or restorative dental treatments that restore function as well as appearance, cosmetic dentistry specifically aims to improve the appearance of the teeth and the beauty of the smile. Cosmetic Dentistry does address any existing dental issues but places an emphasis on the aesthetic pleasantness of the smile.

What are the benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry not only creates good looking teeth but also provides dental health improvements as well as numerous other benefits.

Better oral health:

Crooked teeth, or similar dental issues, often make several hazardous health conditions more likely. An increased chance of infection, gingivitis, bad breath, or the teeth chipping or breaking is alleviated after cosmetic dental treatment.

Improved appearance:

The main purpose of cosmetic dentistry is to improve the appearance of the teeth and it can enhance the overall appearance of the patient as a result. Almost every type of imperfection, including crooked, discolored, cracked, or chipped teeth can be corrected.

Improved self-confidence:

Patients with dental issues are often self-conscious of them and try to avoid situations where their teeth are visible. After cosmetic dentistry procedures the dental issues are resolved, and the appearance is improved. The patient is then able to show off their smile without being self conscious.

Long lasting results:

The results of cosmetic dentistry often lasts from a decade to being perpetual. High quality implants, veneers, laminates, and crowns allow the procedure to last as long as possible. The expected lifespan of each procedure is explained to the patient during consultation.

Short recovery time:

Cosmetic dental procedures, usually, have a shorter recovery time and even allow the patient to start eating within a couple hours. Some cosmetic dental procedures, like composite bonding and dental veneers, don’t even have a recovery period as the patient can return to their routine immediately.

Related physical activities becoming easier:

Patients who have dental issues often have trouble performing simple tasks involving teeth such as chewing, talking, and smiling. Cosmetic dental procedures alleviate the dental issues that impair the ability to perform these actions. As a result the patient is able to perform these simple tasks with ease.

What are the types of cosmetic dental procedures?

Cosmetic dental procedures are mostly defined by the type of dental prosthetic used and what the prosthetic is made out of. Some cosmetic dental procedures are a combination of other dental treatments. Cosmetic dentistry treatments often provide immediate results that are noticeable right after they are performed.

Hollywood Smile

A Hollywood smile aims to improve the natural smile and give it an aesthetically pleasing look. Dental veneers or sometimes crowns are combined with any other necessary dental treatments to produce the best smile. Hollywood smile gets its name from famous Hollywood actors and actresses that have beautiful smiles. As the name implies, Hollywood Smile makes the smile of a hollywood celebrity accessible to everyone.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are fixed prosthetics, tooth-shaped “caps” that are permanently cemented onto the natural teeth with the purpose of covering a damaged or chipped tooth. Crowns strengthen the tooth, and also improve the alignment of the teeth inside the mouth. Crowns can also be used to form a dental bridge as well as to cover a dental implant.

Dental Laminates

A dental laminate is a thin leaf-like material that is placed on the surface of the tooth. Dental laminates improve the overall appearance of the teeth including the shape, size, and the color. Laminates provide an alternative to dental crowns for patients who want to get a Hollywood smile done.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium that are fused into the jawbone. Dental implants allow the missing or damaged teeth to be replaced by artificial teeth by serving as the roots of the missing teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that involves bleaching the teeth to remove stains and lightning the existing color by several shades. Teeth whitening can be performed through a gel-like substance or through laser whitening which involves the bleaching material being activated through a laser.

Composite Bonding

Composite bonding involves tooth-colored resin material being applied to the teeth to change their shape, size or color. Composite bonding closes the gaps, spaces or cracks in between the teeth, alleviates tooth discoloration and changes the shape of the teeth. Composite bonding is considered less invasive and easier to apply than dental crowns.

What is the difference between a general dentist and a cosmetic dentist?

A general dentist focuses on treating or preventing an oral disease associated with pain, discomfort, or oral hygiene. They usually perform procedures such as root canals, dental fillings for cavities or tooth extraction. A cosmetic dentist performs these treatments as well as additional cosmetic treatments that were listed. Even when a cosmetic dentist performs the same treatment the results are often different from that of a general dentist since a cosmetic dentist primarily focuses on the aesthetic pleasantness of the teeth and performs the treatments accordingly.

Reasons to See a Cosmetic Dentist

It is recommended to see a cosmetic dentist when a patient suffers from any kind of tooth irregularity that is physically visible. Misshapen, misaligned, discolored, chipped, or cracked teeth can all be treated through a cosmetic dentist and the patient should make sure to consult a cosmetic dentist if any one of these conditions are present.

What are the advantages of cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry offers various advantages for individuals looking to improve the appearance of their teeth and smile. Some of the key benefits of cosmetic dentistry include:

1. Enhanced Self-Confidence: A more attractive smile can boost your self-esteem and self-confidence. When you're happy with your teeth, you're more likely to smile and engage in social situations.

2. Improved Aesthetics: Cosmetic dentistry can address a wide range of aesthetic issues, such as discolored, misaligned, chipped, or gapped teeth, to create a more appealing and harmonious smile.

3. Enhanced Oral Health: Some cosmetic procedures, like dental veneers or crowns, can also improve the structural integrity of damaged teeth, contributing to better oral health.

4. Increased Career Opportunities: A confident smile can leave a positive impression during job interviews and professional interactions, potentially leading to improved career prospects.

5. Long-Lasting Results: Many cosmetic dental procedures provide long-lasting results, allowing you to enjoy your enhanced smile for years to come.

6. Customization: Cosmetic dentistry is highly customizable. Your dentist can tailor treatments to meet your specific needs and goals, ensuring you achieve the results you desire.

7. Minimally Invasive Options: Some cosmetic procedures, like teeth whitening and dental bonding, are minimally invasive and require little to no alteration of your natural teeth.

8. Natural-Looking Results: Modern cosmetic dentistry techniques and materials can produce results that look natural and blend seamlessly with your existing teeth.

9. Fast Results: Some cosmetic treatments, such as teeth whitening, can provide noticeable improvements in a short amount of time, often in just a single dental visit.

10. Pain Reduction: Cosmetic procedures are typically designed to minimize discomfort and pain, making them more accessible to those who may be anxious about dental work.

11. Better Function: Some cosmetic treatments can also improve the functionality of your teeth, such as correcting bite issues or aligning misaligned teeth, which can enhance your overall oral health.

It's important to note that the specific benefits of cosmetic dentistry can vary depending on the procedures you choose and your individual needs. Before undergoing any cosmetic dental treatment, it's essential to consult with a qualified dentist to discuss your options and ensure that the chosen procedure is suitable for your situation.

What are the disadvantages of cosmetic dentistry?

While cosmetic dentistry offers many benefits, there are also some potential disadvantages and considerations to keep in mind:

1. Cost: Cosmetic dental procedures can be expensive, and they may not be covered by dental insurance. The cost can vary depending on the type of treatment and the extent of work needed.

2. Temporary Nature: Some cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening, are not permanent, and the results may fade over time. This means you may need maintenance or touch-up treatments to maintain the desired appearance.

3. Invasive Procedures: Certain cosmetic treatments, like dental veneers or crowns, may require the removal of a portion of the natural tooth structure. This irreversible alteration of your teeth may be a disadvantage for some individuals.

4. Sensitivity and Discomfort: Some cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening or orthodontic treatment, can cause temporary tooth sensitivity or discomfort.

5. Time Commitment: Some cosmetic treatments may require multiple visits to the dentist's office or an extended period to achieve the desired results. For example, orthodontic treatments can take months or even years to complete.

6. Potential for Complications: As with any medical or dental procedure, there is always a risk of complications or side effects. It's essential to choose a qualified and experienced dentist to minimize these risks.

7. Limited Coverage by Insurance: Dental insurance often covers basic dental care and necessary procedures but may offer limited or no coverage for cosmetic treatments, leaving the cost entirely on the patient.

8. Unrealistic Expectations: Sometimes, individuals may have unrealistic expectations about the results of cosmetic dentistry. It's important to have a clear understanding of what is achievable and to communicate your goals with your dentist.

9. Post-Treatment Care: Many cosmetic procedures require ongoing care and maintenance to ensure the results last. Failing to follow post-treatment care instructions can affect the longevity of the improvements.

10. Potential for Over-Treatment: In some cases, patients may be encouraged to undergo unnecessary or excessive cosmetic procedures by unscrupulous providers. It's important to consult with a reputable and ethical dentist who has your best interests in mind.

Before opting for any cosmetic dental procedure, it's crucial to have a thorough discussion with your dentist. They can help you understand the potential advantages and disadvantages of the treatment and guide you in making an informed decision based on your individual needs and goals.

What is the recovery time?

The recovery time after a cosmetic dental procedure can vary significantly depending on the specific procedure performed, its complexity, and the individual patient's response. Here are some general guidelines for recovery times associated with common cosmetic dental procedures:

1. Teeth Whitening:
   - Recovery Time: Minimal to none.
   - Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after in-office teeth whitening treatments. There may be some temporary tooth sensitivity, but it usually subsides within a day or two.

2. Dental Bonding:
   - Recovery Time: Minimal.
   - Bonding is a minimally invasive procedure, and patients can typically return to their regular routine immediately. It's essential to avoid staining foods and beverages in the days following the procedure.

3. Dental Veneers:
   - Recovery Time: Minimal to a few days.
   - After veneer placement, patients may experience mild sensitivity for a few days. It's also important to avoid hard or sticky foods to prevent damage to the veneers.

4. Dental Crowns:
   - Recovery Time: A few days to a week.
   - After receiving a dental crown, you may experience some discomfort or sensitivity in the treated tooth for a few days. In cases where a crown requires multiple visits, recovery time may be longer.

5. Orthodontic Treatment (Braces or Invisalign):
   - Recovery Time: Variable.
   - The length of recovery time depends on the type and extent of orthodontic treatment. For traditional braces, there may be discomfort and adjustment periods after tightening, while Invisalign users may experience minor discomfort with each new aligner.

6. Dental Implants:
   - Recovery Time: Several weeks to months.
   - Dental implant placement typically involves a recovery period during which the implant integrates with the jawbone (osseointegration). Full recovery may take several months, but most patients can resume normal activities within a few days.

7. Oral Surgery (e.g., Wisdom Teeth Removal):
   - Recovery Time: Several days to a few weeks.
   - More complex oral surgeries may require a longer recovery period, including some swelling, discomfort, and dietary restrictions.

8. Full Smile Makeover:
   - Recovery Time: Variable.
   - A full smile makeover may involve multiple procedures, each with its own recovery timeline. Recovery times can vary widely based on the scope of work.

It's important to follow your dentist's post-procedure instructions for a successful and comfortable recovery. These instructions may include guidelines on oral hygiene, diet, pain management, and any necessary follow-up appointments.

Keep in mind that while you may return to your daily activities relatively quickly after many cosmetic dental procedures, the full results of some treatments may take time to become evident. Patience and adherence to post-procedure care instructions are essential for achieving the best outcomes.

Michaela Pinches reviewed The duty of care has been 100% by the…

The duty of care has been 100% by the surgeon, care team & the translators, especially Bill who has gone above and beyond to make sure we have had the best stay in yasam. He really is the best and couldn't do enough ensure our stay was positive, and comfortable. Steve & Akin have attended to our needs tirelessly daily, along with all the other care colleagues and given the best care ever. The meals were not always good, but did have several options, although if you're English the combination of variety didn't always go together Protein is a big factor for recovery by the hospital, but the catering team need room for improvement based on protein meal choices. The cleaners cater to you're needs aswell not just to keeping your rooms clean and fresh bedding, they help in any other ways they can. I recommend yasam hospital for surgery and care, the team give 100% in everything they do Thank you floor 2 you've been absolutely amazing . ❤️

Julia Walker reviewed 5***** at Yasam

The interpreters were amazing, couldn’t be more helpful, especially Bill who went above & beyond to accommodate us & our quirky ways. The nurses & care assistants couldn’t be more attentive & patient, and worked tirelessly to give round the clock care, especially Steve & Akin. The surgeon Dr Fatih was thorough in his examination & aftercare, I can’t thank everyone enough, and feel confident about the surgery I have had at Yasam hospital. There is room for improvements with meals, & could be better coordination in line with aftercare meal suggestions for recovery. Though you do get 3 meals a day & there is an area to get a drink or sweet snack. I do feel that everyone involved in our care gave 100% & recommend bookingsurgery.com & Yasam hospital for anyone considering surgery.

Poppi reviewed Breast Augmentation with Booking Surgery

I had a fabulous experience with Booking Surgery for my breast augmentation. From start to finish the whole process was so smooth and easy, and made better by my co ordinator Pierre. He was kind and reassuring, and honestly couldn’t do enough for me. He responded swiftly to my questions and queries, nothing was to much for him and I’m so grateful! My surgeon, Dr Ömer Parıldar, was fantastic, and gave me exactly what I wanted. He was very involved with the process visiting me daily after the operation, which was great to ask any questions and put me at ease that my recovery was going well. The staff at Medistanbul were angels, from the nurses to the cleaners everyone was so friendly and caring in their roles. Some more staff from Booking Surgery is like to mention is David Tucker who came to visit me on the ward and chat, which was lovely to meet someone who’s an advocate for what this company can do to improve someone’s entire life! And also, Nadia, who frequently chatted with me made sure I had everything I need, she is a huge asset to this company and for me, the kind and reassuring smiling face you’d need at a time like this. Thank you so much to booking surgery, if I could give more stars I would☺️
