Neck Lift (Lower Rhytidectomy) Surgery

What is Neck Lift surgery?

Neck Lift, also called a Lower Rhytidectomy or Submental Lipectomy, is a Facial Aesthetic Surgery that aims to create a more defined and youthful-looking neck by removing the excess skin and fat around the jaw line. Often Neck Contouring is performed as part of a face-lift, but might not be performed if the patient is not suitable for it.

Neck lift procedures can also include:

  • Cervicoplasty: Removing the excess skin
  • Platysmaplasty: Removing or altering neck muscles
  • Liposuction to remove excess fat

Why is Neck Lift performed?

Neck Lift is often the preferred solution if the patient suffers from turkey wattle neck, excess fat around the neck, or if there is too much excess skin. A “turkey wattle” occurs when excess tissue accumulates under the patient’s jawline and creates the appearance of the section of flesh that hangs beneath a turkey’s neck. Such a look adds years to the affected patient’s age, making them look much older than they actually are. A neck lift is the perfect surgical procedure to alleviate the turkey wattle.

What are the conditions for Neck Lift Surgery?

A Neck Lift is recommended to patients who:

  • Do not have medical conditions that can impair healing or would increase risk of surgery.
  • Can safely go under anesthesia.
  • Have excess skin under the chin and around the neck area that has lost elasticity.
  • Have excess fat under the chin and around the neck area.

What are the Neck Lift surgery types?

There are three types of Neck Lift surgeries, each differing by where the incision is made.

  • The incision is made behind the ear similar to a facelift incision.
  • Under the chin without removing any skin and without the need for an incision in front of the ear.
  • Under the chin through a zig-zag incision.

What Are The Things To Be Considered Before Neck Lift?

Before Neck Lift surgery, patients should:

  • Be at the hospital a day before their surgery for the pre operative tests to be performed.
  • Stop smoking and consuming alcohol at least 2 weeks before the surgery to alleviate the risk of a blood clot.
  • Avoid medication containing aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) for two weeks before and after surgery. These medications may increase the risk of internal bleeding. Patients should confirm each medication and supplement they wish to take with their Patient Coordinator.

Also, the patient's face will be examined and measured, and the surgeon might have photographs taken so that the patient can compare the appearance before and after the Neck Lift surgery.

How is the Neck Lift surgery performed?

Neck Lift surgery can be performed in a variety of ways:

  • An incision can be made behind the ear or alternatively in front of and behind the ear, similar to a facelift incision. In this technique, excess neck skin is removed through the incision made behind the ear.
  • An alternative method involves creating an incision under the chin without removing any skin and without the need for an incision in front of the ear. Release of the neck skin from the underlying muscles allows the skin to contract without skin removal. The platysma muscle is also tightened through the chin incision.
  • In the elderly, skin is removed directly from under the chin through a zig-zag incision. No incision is therefore made in front of or behind the ear. This reduces the complexity of the procedure.

Excess skin and fat are then carefully removed. Tissue and skin are realigned and secured with sutures.

What are The Things To Be Considered After Neck Lift Surgery?

After Neck Lift surgery, patients might experience swelling and bruises. The patients are advised to:

  • Use a special compression garment that will be provided to reduce the swelling.
  • Keep their head straight and not to twist or bend their neck.
  • Protect their skin from the sun and by regularly using sunscreen.

It might take several weeks to months for swelling and bruising to disappear and up to 6 months for the incision lines to completely fade.

What Are The Risks of Neck Lift Surgery?

Risks involved with Neck Lift surgery include, but are not limited to:

  • Hematoma, which is bleeding under the skin.
  • Thick scarring
  • Blood clots
  • Infection
  • Nerve injury
  • Skin loss
  • Risks associated with anesthesia

Another possible risk of neck lift surgery is that the patient might not be satisfied with the results. In this situation, a revisional surgery is possible.

Who Is Neck Lift Surgery For?

Neck lift surgery, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the neck by addressing issues such as loose or sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle banding. It is typically recommended for individuals who are concerned about the following aesthetic concerns:

1. Sagging or Loose Neck Skin: Neck lift surgery can help remove excess skin and tighten the remaining skin to reduce the appearance of sagging or "turkey neck."

2. Excess Neck Fat: If there is localized fat accumulation under the chin and along the neck, liposuction may be performed in conjunction with a neck lift to remove the excess fat.

3. Muscle Banding: Some individuals may experience visible muscle banding in the neck area, creating the appearance of vertical lines or cords. A neck lift can address this issue by repositioning or tightening the underlying neck muscles.

4. Jowls or Double Chin: Neck lift surgery can also help address jowls and a double chin by tightening the skin and underlying tissues, resulting in a more defined jawline and neck contour.

5. Aging Signs: People who wish to address signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of skin elasticity in the neck area, may consider a neck lift.

6. Overall Facial Harmony: A neck lift can enhance the overall balance and harmony of the face, especially when combined with other facial procedures like a facelift or eyelid surgery.

It's important to note that neck lift surgery is a surgical procedure and should only be considered after a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon or a qualified cosmetic surgeon. The suitability for a neck lift varies from person to person, and the surgeon will evaluate the individual's specific concerns, medical history, and goals to determine if they are a good candidate for the procedure. Additionally, the patient should have realistic expectations about the outcomes and recovery process associated with a neck lift.

What can you Expect From Neck Lift Surgery?

Neck lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the neck by addressing issues such as loose or sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle banding. Here's what you can generally expect from the procedure and the associated recovery process:

1. Consultation: Before the surgery, you will have a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon. During this consultation, you will discuss your goals, concerns, and medical history, and the surgeon will determine if you are a suitable candidate for a neck lift.

2. Anesthesia: Neck lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Your surgeon will discuss the anesthesia choice with you based on your specific needs and the extent of the procedure.

3. Surgical Techniques: The specific surgical techniques used during a neck lift can vary based on your individual needs. Common elements of the procedure may include making incisions under the chin or behind the ears, removing excess fat via liposuction, tightening the underlying muscles, and removing or repositioning excess skin.

4. Recovery Period: After the surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery area before being allowed to go home or to a surgical facility. Swelling and bruising are common in the first few days, and you may experience some discomfort. Most patients can return to light activities within a week or two.

5. Results: The results of a neck lift may not be immediately apparent due to post-operative swelling. It can take several weeks to months for the full results to become visible. Over time, you should notice a smoother, tighter neck contour with improved definition.

6. Scarring: There will be incisions made during the surgery, and scarring is an inevitable part of any surgical procedure. However, a skilled surgeon will make incisions in inconspicuous locations and take care to minimize scarring. Scars will fade over time, and there are scar management techniques that can help improve their appearance.

7. Longevity: The results of a neck lift can be long-lasting, but they are not permanent. The aging process continues, so the neck may show signs of aging in the years following the procedure. However, the improvements achieved with a neck lift should remain for many years.

8. Maintenance: To maintain the results of your neck lift and promote overall skin health, it's important to follow a good skincare routine, protect your skin from sun exposure, and live a healthy lifestyle.

It's crucial to have a thorough discussion with your surgeon about what you can expect from your specific neck lift procedure, as each case is unique. Your surgeon will provide detailed pre-operative and post-operative instructions to help ensure a successful recovery and the best possible outcome.

During The Neck Lift Procedure?

During a neck lift procedure, a surgical team, typically led by a board-certified plastic surgeon or a qualified cosmetic surgeon, performs a series of surgical steps to improve the appearance of the neck. The specific techniques and steps involved can vary depending on the individual's needs and goals, but here's a general overview of what you can expect during the procedure:

1. Anesthesia: The surgery begins with the administration of anesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss the choice of anesthesia with you before the procedure. Neck lift surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on your specific needs and the extent of the surgery.

2. Incisions: The surgeon will make carefully planned incisions in inconspicuous locations. Common incision sites include below the chin and around or behind the ears. These incisions are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring.

3. Liposuction (if needed): In some cases, the surgeon may use liposuction to remove excess fat from the neck area. Liposuction involves the insertion of a thin, hollow tube (cannula) to suction out unwanted fat.

4. Muscle Tightening: If there is muscle banding or laxity in the neck area, the surgeon may perform platysmaplasty, which involves repositioning or tightening the underlying neck muscles. This helps create a smoother and more youthful neck contour.

5. Skin Lifting and Reshaping: The surgeon will lift and reposition the skin on the neck and lower face, removing excess skin as needed. This step helps eliminate sagging or loose skin and creates a tighter appearance.

6. Closure: After the necessary adjustments have been made, the incisions are closed with sutures, skin adhesives, or other closure techniques. These sutures are often placed in a way that minimizes visible scarring.

7. Dressings and Compression: The surgeon may place dressings and compression garments around the surgical area to reduce swelling and support the healing process.

8. Monitoring: After the procedure is complete, you will be monitored in a recovery area to ensure your initial recovery is progressing as expected.

The duration of the surgery can vary based on the extent of the procedure and the specific techniques used. A neck lift typically takes several hours to complete.

It's essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions carefully to promote a successful recovery and optimal results. You should expect some degree of swelling, bruising, and discomfort after the surgery, but these side effects are temporary and should gradually subside as you heal. Your surgeon will provide guidance on managing pain, caring for your incisions, and when to schedule follow-up appointments.

After The Neck Lift Procedure?

After a neck lift procedure, the post-operative recovery period is a crucial phase in achieving the best possible results and ensuring your safety and comfort. Here's what you can expect and what you should do during the recovery period:

1. Immediate Recovery: After the surgery, you will spend some time in a recovery area where medical professionals will monitor your initial recovery. Once you are stable, you will be allowed to return home or to a surgical facility with the assistance of a responsible adult.

2. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising in the neck and lower face are common after a neck lift. These side effects usually peak within the first 48 hours and gradually subside over the following weeks. Applying cold compresses and keeping your head elevated while resting can help reduce swelling.

3. Discomfort: You may experience some pain or discomfort. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to manage this. Follow the dosing instructions carefully.

4. Dressing and Compression Garments: Your surgeon may place dressings and compression garments around the surgical area. These help reduce swelling, support the healing process, and protect the incisions. Follow your surgeon's instructions for wearing and caring for these garments.

5. Incision Care: Keep the incision sites clean and dry as instructed by your surgeon. They will provide guidelines on when and how to cleanse and apply any prescribed ointments. Be gentle to avoid disrupting the incisions.

6. Physical Activity: Follow your surgeon's advice regarding physical activity and exercise. In the early stages of recovery, you should avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending over. Gradually reintroduce light activities as approved by your surgeon.

7. Diet and Hydration: Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated to support the healing process. Avoid foods that could potentially increase swelling, such as salty and processed foods.

8. Rest and Sleep: Adequate rest and sleep are crucial for a smooth recovery. Try to sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling. You may need extra pillows or a reclining chair.

9. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon. These appointments are important for monitoring your progress, removing sutures or staples, and assessing the healing process.

10. Sun Protection: Protect your incisions from the sun. Sun exposure can lead to hyperpigmentation and worsen scarring. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 when you need to go outside.

11. Manage Expectations: Understand that the results of your neck lift will not be immediately visible due to swelling. It can take several weeks to months for the full results to become apparent.

12. Scar Care: Your surgeon will provide instructions on scar care. Follow these guidelines to help minimize the appearance of scars over time.

It's essential to maintain open communication with your surgeon throughout the recovery process. If you notice any unusual symptoms, have concerns, or questions, do not hesitate to contact your surgeon's office. With proper care and patience, most individuals can achieve the desired results from a neck lift and enjoy a more youthful and rejuvenated neck and lower face.

What’s The Difference Between A Facelift And A Neck Lift?

A facelift and a neck lift are both cosmetic surgical procedures aimed at rejuvenating the appearance of the face and neck. While they share some similarities and are often performed together, they target different areas and address specific concerns. Here are the key differences between a facelift and a neck lift:

1. Area of Focus:

   - Facelift (Rhytidectomy): A facelift primarily focuses on the lower two-thirds of the face, which includes the cheeks, jawline, and marionette lines (the lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the chin). It is used to address sagging skin, wrinkles, and jowls in these areas.

   - Neck Lift (Lower Rhytidectomy): A neck lift, as the name suggests, is specifically designed to improve the appearance of the neck. It targets issues such as loose or sagging neck skin, excess fat under the chin (submental fat), and muscle banding in the neck.

2. Concerns Addressed:

   - Facelift: A facelift is ideal for individuals who want to address signs of aging in the mid-to-lower face and jawline. This may include sagging cheeks, deep folds around the mouth, and jowls.
   - Neck Lift: A neck lift is suitable for those with concerns related to the neck area, including the appearance of a "turkey neck" (sagging skin under the chin), vertical muscle bands in the neck, and excess fat in the neck region.

3. Surgical Techniques:

   - Facelift: Facelift surgery often involves making incisions around the ear and hairline, allowing the surgeon to access and lift the underlying tissues of the lower face. Excess skin is then removed, and the skin is re-draped for a more youthful appearance.
   - Neck Lift: Neck lift surgery typically involves incisions under the chin and around or behind the ears. It may include liposuction to remove excess fat, muscle tightening (platysmaplasty) to address muscle banding, and skin repositioning to reduce sagging.

4. Combination Procedures:

Many patients opt for both a facelift and a neck lift simultaneously to achieve a comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Combining these procedures can create a more harmonious and balanced result.

5. Recovery and Results:

Both facelift and neck lift surgeries involve similar recovery processes, including swelling, bruising, and discomfort. However, the specific details of recovery can vary based on the extent of the procedures. The results of both surgeries are long-lasting, though the aging process continues, and maintenance is essential for sustained improvements.

Before deciding on a facelift, a neck lift, or a combination of both, it's essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon or a qualified cosmetic surgeon. They can assess your individual concerns and recommend the most appropriate procedure or combination of procedures to achieve your aesthetic goals.

What Are The Benefits of A Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that offers several benefits for individuals who are concerned about the appearance of their neck. The specific advantages of a neck lift include:

1. Improved Neck Contour: One of the primary benefits of a neck lift is the enhancement of neck contour. The procedure can address sagging or loose skin, muscle banding, and excess fat, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more youthful neck appearance.

2. Elimination of "Turkey Neck": A neck lift is effective in addressing the appearance of a "turkey neck," where the skin under the chin sags and creates a wattle-like appearance. The procedure can remove excess skin and restore a more defined neck and jawline.

3. Reduced Muscle Banding: Many people experience muscle banding or vertical lines in the neck as they age. A neck lift can involve platysmaplasty, a procedure that tightens and repositions the neck muscles to reduce the visibility of these bands.

4. Youthful Appearance: By tightening the skin and underlying tissues, a neck lift can help you achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance, making you look younger and more vibrant.

5. Enhanced Jawline Definition: The procedure can also contribute to a more defined and attractive jawline, which can have a positive impact on overall facial aesthetics.

6. Increased Self-Confidence: Improvements in the neck's appearance often lead to increased self-confidence and self-esteem. Feeling better about your appearance can have a positive effect on various aspects of your life.

7. Long-Lasting Results: The results of a neck lift can be long-lasting, providing you with a more youthful neck for many years. While the aging process continues, the improvements achieved with a neck lift should remain for an extended period.

8. Combination with Other Procedures: A neck lift can be performed in combination with other facial procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), or brow lift to achieve a comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

9. Natural-Looking Results: When performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon, a neck lift can provide natural-looking results that enhance your appearance without an overly "worked on" or artificial look.

10. Customization: Neck lift procedures can be tailored to address your specific concerns. Your surgeon will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals.

It's important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon or a qualified cosmetic surgeon to discuss your specific concerns and determine if a neck lift is the right procedure for you. They can provide guidance on the potential benefits, risks, and expected outcomes of the surgery.

What Is Neck Lift Recovery Like?

The recovery process following a neck lift is an essential aspect of achieving the best possible results and ensuring your comfort and safety. Here's what you can generally expect during the recovery period after a neck lift surgery:

The duty of care has been 100% by the surgeon, care team & the translators, especially Bill who has gone above and beyond to make sure we have had the best stay in yasam. He really is the best and couldn't do enough ensure our stay was positive, and comfortable. Steve & Akin have attended to our needs tirelessly daily, along with all the other care colleagues and given the best care ever. The meals were not always good, but did have several options, although if you're English the combination of variety didn't always go together Protein is a big factor for recovery by the hospital, but the catering team need room for improvement based on protein meal choices. The cleaners cater to you're needs aswell not just to keeping your rooms clean and fresh bedding, they help in any other ways they can. I recommend yasam hospital for surgery and care, the team give 100% in everything they do Thank you floor 2 you've been absolutely amazing . ❤️

The interpreters were amazing, couldn’t be more helpful, especially Bill who went above & beyond to accommodate us & our quirky ways. The nurses & care assistants couldn’t be more attentive & patient, and worked tirelessly to give round the clock care, especially Steve & Akin. The surgeon Dr Fatih was thorough in his examination & aftercare, I can’t thank everyone enough, and feel confident about the surgery I have had at Yasam hospital. There is room for improvements with meals, & could be better coordination in line with aftercare meal suggestions for recovery. Though you do get 3 meals a day & there is an area to get a drink or sweet snack. I do feel that everyone involved in our care gave 100% & recommend bookingsurgery.com & Yasam hospital for anyone considering surgery.

He was kind and reassuring, and honestly couldn’t do enough for me. He responded swiftly to my questions and queries, nothing was to much for him and I’m so grateful! My surgeon, Dr Ömer Parıldar, was fantastic, and gave me exactly what I wanted. He was very involved with the process visiting me daily after the operation, which was great to ask any questions and put me at ease that my recovery was going well. The staff at Medistanbul were angels, from the nurses to the cleaners everyone was so friendly and caring in their roles. Some more staff from Booking Surgery is like to mention is David Tucker who came to visit me on the ward and chat, which was lovely to meet someone who’s an advocate for what this company can do to improve someone’s entire life! And also, Nadia, who frequently chatted with me made sure I had everything I need, she is a huge asset to this company and for me, the kind and reassuring smiling face you’d need at a time like this.
