There isn’t a set weight limit for Bariatric Surgery, it is often recommended for patients to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28, but the final decision is made by our Bariatric team and is dependent on the patient’s health history.
Bariatric Surgery is overall considered very safe among major surgeries, even safer than gallbladder removal, so it is not a high risk surgery. But, like any major surgery, comes with certain risks arising from the procedure and the anesthesia administered. If a patient is at a higher than average risk, they will be alerted of such and, depending on the risk, will not be cleared for surgery by our Bariatric Team.

Bariatric Surgery is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia, thereby incisions are minimal and pain as well as discomfort is very low. Gas pain might arise the first few days post surgery due the alterations to the digestive system. To prevent it, the patient is mobilized just 4 hours after the surgery. At the same time, painkillers and IV fluids are administered as well.
The operation, on average, takes 1.5 - 2 hours.
